Sony boss Chris Deering has surprised many by predicting that the firm’s PlayStation 2 console, which launched in the UK in the year 2000, will have more active users than Nintendo’s Wii by 2011.
Speaking at the launch of Edinburgh’s Interactive Festival, the games chief said all platforms will see major growth by 2011, predicting there will be 2.5 billion gamers worldwide.
Deering said the DS will have rocketed to 150m users, but top of the home console market will be the PS2 with 90m active users.
The Sony boss added the Wii will be second with 80m users, the PS3 and PSP will be at 70m and the Xbox 360 at 40m.

That’s only possible if he’s counting third-world country sales. There is NO WAY the active user base in North America, Europe and Asia will hold that high. Most PS3 and 360 users were at some point PS2 users and they’ve moved on. So, when he’s calculating the “active userbase” I seriously hope he’s subtracted those users from the “install base” numbers.
Otherwise, this is another PR spin.

Actually, the PS2 has a far better game library. The Wii hysteria is starting to slow already and it will peak in 2009. The PS2 will be $99 next year and sales, which are still pretty decent, will pick up a bit. It still has games (Ratchet and Clank, God of War, GT4) which look and play better than anything on the Wii.
Just compare those games with the best stuff on the Wii and it will be obvious that the Wii is just a beautifully repackaged GameCube with a really awesome controller setup. The PSTwo is already light, efficient, and absolutely reliable.

first of all the ps2 would be released for 11 years at that time and the wii would be at 5 years. the 360 will have more then 40 mil because those sales are picking up.

dude 360 sales have slowed down this year except for this month and April (Price Cut and GTA IV being the reason) but in my personal opinion screw ps2 and WII Atari 2600 FTW

Dont forget the over 80-100 million DS users there!
We could even count the Game Boys out there it would even beat the PS2!

The system is FAR from dead.
Watch as it soon outsells the xbox 360 which is into its soon approaching its 3rd year.
I haven’t used more recent figures as they are skewed by the 20 gig X 360 sale.
